Developmental editing is the process of editing a manuscript for content and structure. This is usually the first kind of editing a manuscript will go through, and it deals with characters and their motivations, or story and plot points. I'll recommend ways to make your story more powerful and meaningful and your characters stronger in order to help you make your manuscript the best it can be!
During this process, it is very important to be open-minded and receptive to possible changes your editor might recommend or questions your editor might have for you. The changes I recommend might be larger than you're expecting because we're working on a broad story and structure level, but it is always up to your discretion to accept or reject my recommendations. It's also very important to continue to use Microsoft Word's Track Changes when changing your document after the first pass so I can more efficiently find the parts of the document that you made changes to.
I will give your document a maximum of three passes. We will prepare a schedule that works for the both of us. I will edit your document once using Microsoft Word's Track Changes and prepare an editorial letter for you that describes in more detail the recommendations I suggest and the strengths and weaknesses of your story. You can then take your manuscript back and make the recommended changes and then send it back to me. We can go back and forth making changes this way three times.
